Jan Wall has painted for the last fifty years, off and on. Retirement has given her a chance to move from hobbyist to professional, making painting part of every day. Her art education has been at Laney College in Oakland, where she taught English for 45 years. There she had the good fortune to study with June Steingart, Bill Snyder, Charles Chavez, Heinrich Smidt, and David Brown. She's grateful for their skill, generosity, and patience. She has of course been influenced by her teachers, especially by Bill Snyder, and she says she hopes by the great Winslow Homer. In her work, she looks for that place where work and play meet, where spirit and matter come together.
